Happy New Year to Our JJ Families!!!

We are excited about new opportunities for our students in the upcoming months.

Reminder: Dogs Not Allowed on School Grounds

City Bylaw: https://www.calgary.ca/bylaws/dogs.html

For the safety and comfort of all students, please remember that dogs (with the exception of Service Dogs) are not permitted on CBE schoolgrounds at any time. If you are walking your child to school, please stay on the sidewalks with your pet and avoid entering the playground, field or compound areas. We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep our school a safe and welcoming place for everyone!

Attendance

Regular attendance at school is important for children's academic growth and confidence. When students attend school regularly and arrive on time they are ready for learning and can participate in all areas of school life. In elementary school, important literacy instruction happens early in the morning when students are alert and ready to learn. Students who arrive late miss this foundational learning.

At Janet Johnstone School, we strive to make sure that our attendance records are accurate so we know all children are safe. Please help us by letting us know if your child is going to be late or absent.

Attendance Line: 403-777-8670 ext. 1.

Janet Johnstone School has a safety phone-in attendance policy. Parents are asked to phone the school prior to 8:00 AM, at 403-777-8670 ext.1, if their child is going to be absent or late. Please notify the office, not the teacher, of your child’s absence or if they will be late. Your child's safety is important to us. We depend on you to phone us to let us know where your child is.

More information about CBE's attendance policy can be found here: Attendance

Gymnastics at Janet Johnstone

For the next 3 weeks, all students will be learning gymnastics skills in Phys Ed. Please see the information below so you can help your child be prepared for gymnastics.

Learning Goals:

Our goal is to provide an opportunity for students to experience various movement skills and to plan their own unique routine based on their individual skill set. We encourage students to participate at their level of comfort, to climb as high as they feel safe, and to only attempt movements they can do confidently. All students are at different levels and there is no expectation that a student should perform anything beyond their skill level.

Progression of Skills:

Mats: Basic skill acquisitions such as poses, balancing, jumping, safe landing, and exploring a variety of ways to move/travel across the mats.

Low-level equipment: Continue developing previous skills through adding

equipment and learning how to use it safely.

Low level + Canadian Climber: Adding new dimensions of movement using

different apparatus and building on basic skills.

Assessment: Presentation of a short routine.

Dressing for Gymnastics:

When participating in gymnastics over the few weeks, we ask that students are dressed appropriately and prepared to participate by adhering to the following:

▪ Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement (no special uniforms or leotards are required – sweatpants/jogging pants/leggings and a t-shirt work best.

▪ Tight fitting clothing is preferable instead of loose fitting or baggy clothing as they may get caught on equipment when climbing.

▪ All jewelry should be removed (please leave at home). This includes watches, rings, necklaces, dangling/hoop earrings etc.

▪ Students with long hair should have their hair tied back. Please provide hair elastics.

▪ Students will be actively moving, so please do not wear footed tights and no dresses or skirts.

Please feel free to contact Mme Lina if you have any questions.
