One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

🧸 Wear your favourite Halloween PJs,and please no costumes. Bring a blanket or camping chair, and get cozy for a fun family night!

⚠️ A Quick Reminder About School Zone Safety
A friendly but important reminder that the safety of our kids and fellow school families needs to come first when dropping off and picking up at school.
We’ve already had some alarming incidents since the first day of school, and if this is any indication of what’s to come, we could be looking at a very serious situation. We really don’t want to wait for something to happen before everyone starts taking these concerns seriously.
Please remember:
🚌 City bus zones are NO PARKING, NO STOPPING and NO WAITING zones — even for a minute. Please keep these areas clear.
🚗 The Hug & Go area is not your personal front-of-the-line parking space. Please do not park and sit in the Hug & Go area for 30 minutes waiting for the bell to ring. Please be considerate of the families who are actually using the area for a quick pickup or drop-off before or after the bell. The goal is to keep traffic moving and make the area accessible to everyone.
🚸 Please do not park or stop on corners or anywhere that obstructs crosswalks. Visibility is critical for children and drivers.
🐢 School zones are 30 km/h. Please slow down and respect the rules of the road. We don't want anyone receiving a hefty ticket and/or demerit points — and more importantly, we don't want anyone getting hurt.
We know school drop-off and pickup can be busy, but a little patience and following the rules can make a huge difference in keeping our kids safe.
Please look out for our students, our families, and each other. Getting to school a minute faster is never worth putting someone’s safety at risk.

About Our School Council
As a parent/guardian of a child attending Janet Johnstone School, you are automatically a member of the School Council (JJSC). The Council consists of parents, teachers and community members who are eager to help guide and provide meaningful feedback on our children’s educational experiences, both in the school and on the school grounds and to make suggestions for how to make our children’s school experience the best it can be.
We also work alongside the Friends of Janet Johnstone School Association (FJJSA), which is the incorporated non-profit society responsible for fundraising. One of our responsibilities is to advise the school on how to allocate these fundraising dollars. Our goal is to enhance our children’s learning experiences and opportunities they would otherwise not be able to receive. We work together with the school administration to discuss purchases to be sure we are spending the fundraising dollars wisely.

Meeting Dates and Times
Meetings are usually the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. All meetings for the 2026 - 2027 school year will be held at the school with an online link for those that can't attend in person. Please watch the weekly Week at a Glance for information about the meetings.
Please note: Babysitting will not be provided at meetings in the 2026 - 2027 school year.
