Our school council is hard at work to make every student's experience here at JJ is extra welcoming and wonderful! There are lots of initiatives and things in the works that we'd like to share and as always, we welcome the input of all members of our school community at any of our monthly meetings. JJ community members can also reach out to our school council any time via their email, jjsc.fjjsa@gmail.com.

Some things our school council wanted to share:

1) We are preparing our school garden beds for another bountiful growing season and would like to ask JJ families to purchase and donate a few bags of sea soil to augment our plant potential. Green Gate Garden Centre (14111 Macleod Trail South) has graciously offered us a discount on this product (see the attached photo). Please go to volunteersignup.org/E7PD3 for more information and to sign up to donate. Thank you so much!

2) Planning has begun for this year's spring dance which will happen at the school on June 13th. Our dance coordinator is hoping for a few JJ community members to help share the load. If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact Torrie at torrielynn@live.com.

3) Our school playground is inspected regularly and while it continues to be a fun and safe place for students and neighbourhood kids to play, it is showing its age and will need to be replaced in the next few years. We have begun the planning process but as this is an immense task, we are starting a playground planning committee. If you have any questions or would like to help, please reach out to fjjsaplayground@gmail.com.

4) Both the school council (Janet Johnstone School Council, or JJSC) and corresponding fundraising association (Friends of Janet Johnstone School Association, or FJJSA) are governed by operational procedures and bylaws that must be updated from time to time. This work has begun with guidance from regulatory bodies like the Alberta School Councils Association, The Muttart Foundation and The Alberta Society's Act, and must be reviewed by our school community before being approved. Please find both the existing documents and revised documents attached. These documents are in progress and will be discussed at our upcoming monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024 at 6:30. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to our JJSC chair & FJJSA president at jjsc.fjjsa@gmail.com.

5) The FJJSA still needs a volunteer to take over as secretary for our monthly meetings. As there are only a couple of meetings remaining this school year, we are hoping for someone who will step in to the role for this and next school year. Duties include attending the monthly meetings in order to take meeting minutes which are then shared with attendees and the executive. There is also some light paperwork & record keeping involved. If you have any questions or would like to help, please reach out to our JJSC chair & FJJSA president at jjsc.fjjsa@gmail.com.

6) In addition to the secretary position, there are always ways that volunteers can contribute to our school community, both during the school day (e.g. JJ reading army, field trips, library, etc.) or outside of school hours (e.g. playground committee, dance committee, organizing a fundraiser, etc.). If you are wondering what opportunities might exist or would like to volunteer, please reach out to our volunteer coordinators Jocelyn and Laura at volunteer.jjsc@gmail.com.
