Safety Weeks at Janet Johnstone
For the next 2 weeks, teachers will focus on lessons that help our students safely navigate the community and the internet. These lessons connect with Alberta's Physical Education and Wellness curriculum for all grades.
Here are some resources that caregivers can explore with their children:
Our staff will be working on our annual Digital Citizenship Plan and we will share it with families at the end of October.
Child & Youth Well-Being Family & Caregiver Series
There are still many online sessions for parents/guardians on topics such as Digital Safety, Stress, Sexual Health, School Avoidance and Sleep Hygiene.
Information can be found here: Sessions
Solving Problems at School
Young children learn to get along with others at home, in the classroom and during unstructured play time such as recess. Understanding and expressing feelings and interacting with others are also part of the Physical Education and Wellness curriculum and CBE's Student Well-being Framework .
At Janet Johnstone School we take a team approach to social skills teaching which happens in the classroom, in our whole-school assemblies, at lunch and recess and in the office when Administration helps children solve problems. This year, we are introducing common language: WITS.
Family Groups
Our teachers have been working together to create amazing opportunities for our students and we are excited that we will begin Family Groups this Friday!
One or two Fridays a month, all students participate in Family Groups. Family Groups are mixed groups of students from all grades and the French Immersion and English programs. Family groups meet in the same classroom with their animal groups. The animals are based on Indigenous teachings of the Medicine Wheel. Teachers rotate through the groups and teach lessons related to Social Emotional Learning, Indigenous ways of knowing, outdoor learning and new this year: Space. Family Groups are another way that our staff works together to help students feel that they belong and are connected to our school. Learning with other children and adults helps students increase their self-confidence and builds more friendships.
Halloween at JJ
We will celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 30. Students are welcome to wear a costume or their pajamas on that day (AM kindergarten students can wear their costumes or pajamas on Thursday, October 29). Teachers will plan Halloween-related learning activities for their classes and students will be able to show their costumes to their Family Groups.
Children who wear costumes must be able to participate in all activities comfortably (no inflatables). Please make sure that your child's costume is not too scary or gory and leave masks and weapons at home.
At school we do not share food so we can protect children with allergies. Please do not send Halloween candy to school.
