Hello Janet Johnstone Community,

No School

This is a reminder that there will be no school on Friday, September 27 as we have a Non-Instruction Day and on Monday, September 30 for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Staffing Announcement

On Monday September 23, our new Principal, Ms. Schmitt is joining our school. She is very excited to meet the students and families. She is eager to start her new assignment. On the same day, we will say goodbye to Mr. Marquis, as his assignment at Janet Johnstone as Acting Principal is ending.  We will also say goodbye to Ms. Galvin. She is starting her new assignment at a different school as an Assistant Principal on October 1.

Mr. Marquis would like to thank the Janet Johnstone community for their warm welcome and their support during his assignment.

We have many students with nut allergies this year. Please send a nut free snack and lunch with your child.

Terry Fox Run

Due to the inclement weather on Friday, September 20, 2024, we had to postpone our Terry Fox Run. Monday, September 23, Janet Johnstone School will participate in the annual Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research.  We will start the day Monday with an assembly and we will make our way outside. Parents are welcomed to join us for the walk/run in honour of Terry, a Canadian hero who set on a path to change the world.

Donations for the Terry Fox Foundation will be accepted until Thursday, September 26. Students are encouraged to bring in “TOONIES FOR TERRY” or other donations of your choice.

Meet the Teacher

Open House

We invite you to meet your child’s teacher and see their classroom this Thursday, September 26 from 6:00 PM -7:30 PM.  This is an optional and informal drop-in time for those interested students and families.  You will have an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and see their classroom and the school. The open house is not parent-teacher interviews, if you have more detailed questions about your student’s current learning or want to share information with the teacher about your student’s learning needs, please reach out to your student’s teacher through email to set up a phone conversation or in-person meeting.

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth and Reconciliation: Staff and students will be taking time to learn about Truth and Reconciliation during the week leading up to National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (Monday September 30 is the holiday. There will be no school that day).

We invite students, staff, and visitors to wear orange shirts for JJ’s Orange Shirt Day on Thursday, September 26 where we will be reflecting together on our learning and the actions we have taken and will take to make a positive contribution.

Library Volunteers

Mrs. Knox, our library assistant, is looking for volunteers to help in the library for book exchange! If you are interested in volunteering, please email Mrs. Knox (caknox@cbe.ab.ca) with the subject Janet Johnstone Library Volunteers. Once we have volunteers organized, the library will be open for book exchange.

From the Office

Have you completed your student’s yearly documents?

Thank you to those families that have already completed the following forms online:

Demographic Verification

Annual Authorization

Citizenship Information Update (if necessary)

All these forms are online in your MyCBE Account.  The CBE has extended the deadline for these forms to Friday, September 20.  If you have not yet completed these forms, please log into your MyCBE account – link – and complete them as soon as possible.

Is your student going to be absent?

If your student is going to be absent, please contact our school absence line at 403-777-8670 ext. 1.  This line is open 24 hours.  Please leave your student’s name, first and last, teacher name, and reason for absence.  Phone calls received after 8:30am may result in a phone call home from our automated attendance line.

Traffic and Parking

If you are dropping off your student and not walking them to school, please have them cross the street at the crosswalk and not jaywalk among the traffic and between parked cars. The mornings are getting darker. We are seeing some very dangerous behaviours.

We have relaxed entry every morning to help with student entry (7:50-8:00 am). Thank you to the families who walk or who take the time to park a short distance away from the school to help reduce the traffic. It makes a big difference for the safety of our students and helps with some of the traffic congestion. A few reminders:

  • The school bus zone (along Shannon Close) is a no stopping or parking zone. We have several buses that bring students each day and this area needs to remain clear.
  • Please, do not park or drop students off in the staff parking lot. When walking through the parking lot, please use the sidewalk.
  • The City Bus Zone (along Shawnessy Drive) is a no stopping or parking zone. Please ensure you do not stop to drop students off in this zone.
  • The drop and go zone (along Shawnessy Drive) is for student drop off. Please do not park in this area even for a short period of time.
  • Please be courteous and refrain from blocking the driveways of our neighbours.
  • Please do not park by street corner curbs, it creates obstacles for buses, cars and pedestrians.

Bikes and Scooters

We appreciate everyone walking their bikes and scooters while on school property for the safety of everyone.

Dogs

Thank you to our families who have been observing the City of Calgary Bylaw 47M2021 and keeping your beautiful pets off school property.

Lunch Supervision

The Calgary Board of Education provides students with the option to stay at school for lunch. Lunch Supervision is offered to all students in Grades 1- 6.
Lunch supervision services provide participating students with supervision while they are eating and during the lunch period activities. Students staying at school during the lunch period are required to pay the annual Lunch Supervision Fee. Revenue from these fees are used to hire lunchroom supervisors. Income tax receipts are issued for the Lunch Supervision Fee: receipts may be included as child care expenses for income tax purposes.

If your student is staying at school to eat their lunch, you must register for this service.  Service registration can be found in your MyCBE Account under service registrations.  Students that stay at school for lunch who have not yet registered, will be automatically registered by the school and the lunchroom supervision fee will be applied to their MyCBE account.

  • CBE has a waiver process for families who cannot afford to pay the fees.

Alternatively, you may pick your child up daily during their lunch block.

Note

Use of service indicates that the Parent/Guardian accepts the terms and the responsibility to pay the annual fee.
