A small group of caring community members have been cleaning up our garden boxes, leaving beautiful sunflowers! Thank you for pitching in to support our school. Our School Council members have some exciting ideas for the garden boxes in the spring. Stay tuned!
Truth and Reconciliation
At Janet Johnstone School, we are committed to creating a school community where everyone feels like they belong and building respectful relationships with each other and the land. The week of September 21, our classes spent some time learning about Fall Equinox and Treaty 7. The week of September 28, we will continue our shared learning about how every child matters and our part in helping everyone feel like they belong, culminating in Orange Shirt Day on Thursday, October 1. Students are invited to wear any orange clothing on that day or all week.

Teachers will share picture books at students' developmental levels such as With Our Orange Hearts by Phyllis Webstad.

Body-To Do: Actively create opportunities for students, staff, and families to learn about and engage in Indigenous land-based and place-based learning. (Connects to TRC Call to Action 62.2)

Nature Wellness Residency
We are looking forward to the first phase of our Nature Wellness Residency with our special guest facilitator Ms. Jenik. In October, our grade 3 and 4 classes will spend time in the natural area behind the school learning from the land and about the benefits of spending time outside. They will also go on a full-day field trip to the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area. Grade 1, 2 and Kindergarten will have their residencies in the spring.
Thank you to FJJSA for paying for the buses for the field trips and for the residency!
Pre-service Teachers
Janet Johnstone School is a great place for beginning teachers to learn. We are pleased to welcome pre-service teachers from Ambrose University, Campus St. Jean, Mount Royal University, St. Mary's University and University of Calgary.
