The expectations for student conduct and the approach to discipline at Janet Johnstone School align with the CBE's Progressive Discipline Policy .
Supporting students with behaviour is part of teaching and learning. Our goal is for everyone to contribute to our welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment. A consistent approach to school expectations by school staff, students, and parents/guardians results in students understanding and following expectations at Janet Johnstone School.
Everyone Does Their Part
The teacher establishes clear expectations with their classroom community. The teacher facilitates problem solving conversations between students if conflicts arise.
The student is aware, understands and follows expectations to help maintain a safe and productive learning environment where all students belong. Students model appropriate behaviour for others in the school. Students ask for help from adults at school to help solve problems.
The parent/guardian supports, cooperates, provides input and models behaviour and an attitude conducive to their child’s learning.
School Expectations & Rules
- Treat others with kindness and respect
 - Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
 - Use courteous language
 - Walk in the halls
 - Follow directions when asked

With adult guidance and support, children take responsibility for their learning and their actions. Our goal is that each child grows in self-monitoring his/her own behaviours in order to contribute to our school community. Teachers regularly refer to school expectations and have class meetings to discuss issues that arise. Teachers use the Student Friendly Code of Conduct with their students to discuss positive behaviours and how to get help from adults at school if they need it.
